The mangroves

The zone between sea and land, brackish water gurgles between the air roots of the mangroves, a smell of decay and rotting material.
Mangrove roots have formed natural tunnels and coves, hiding places for pirates. Treasures are supposed to be hidden here. The humidity is overwhelming, the air stuffy. A clearing where a sweet water stream runs into the sea. In the distance a large flock of pelicans take a bath, a sea lion between them; a white egret hunts for fish.
Just a few meters away waves break at the rocky shore; marine iguanas cramp to the stones in the foam. Crabs hide under the boulders, everywhere is movement. The flood has left a small pool; it will come back to reunite.
